POTM #7

July 2015: Servant Of Demidos
servantWith such a low health pool the Servant Of Demidos can really make use of the magic racial and its 366 power is nothing to scoff at. This is a pet that I always think “I could do something really cool with that”, yet never do. Well, now it’s your chance to do something really cool with it. There are some meaningful choices to make with the move set: Magic Sword or Arcane Explosion, Siphon Anima or Clean-Up, Lightning Shield or Soulrush? I’m interested to see what people can do with it.

How does the contest work? Each participant will submit one team that includes the pet of the month. Teams must be in by the 10th of the month. Once a team is submitted there is no changing the move set, so please be careful with your submission. No duplicate pets are allowed.

Please use this format:
Team Name (optional)
H/P Fragment Of Anger (Seethe, Spiritfire Beam, Spirit Spikes)
P/S Stonegrinder (Woodchipper,Thunderbolt,Clean-Up)
P/P Twilight Fiendling (Creepy Chomp, Crreping Ooze, Siphon Life)

… as opposed to:
Team Name (optional)
H/P Fragment Of Anger (2,1,2)
P/S Stonegrinder (2,1,1)
P/P Twilight Fiendling (1,2,2)

I like everything to be uniform and the latter creates an extra level of work for me. Thanks :)

Once again I have changed the rules, after months (:P) of trying to find the best system I have given up on overcomplicating things and have finally gone with simplicity.

There are no more team points, no more quality win points.

There will be a “pet allowance”. The allowance will tell you how many non, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd-tier pet(s) you can use on your team. You can always use pets that are on a tier lower than the allowed pets. For example, if you are allowed one 2nd-tier pet then you could choose a non or 3rd-tier pet in its place.

This month’s pet allowance:
1 2nd-tier pet and 1 3rd-tier pet
OR
1 1st-tier pet and 1 non-tier pet

So your options look like this:

POTM
1st-tier
non-tier

or

POTM
2nd-tier pet
3rd-tier pet

or

POTM
2nd-tier
non-tier

or

POTM
3rd-tier
non-tier

or

POTM
non-tier pet
non-tier pet

You don’t get anything extra for choosing non-tier pets so you might as well use the allowance. Or you could choose two non-tier pets and show off your ability to find hidden gems in that long list of pets. It’s up to you!

Here is the tier list: Top & High Tier List

Since there are no more quality win points, progress to the championship rounds will be based solely on points from wins and draws.

Each win will be worth ten points, each draw will be worth five points. A stalemate will be considered a draw.

Initially I will play each submitted team an equal number of times. The number of times that I play each team will depend on the number of submissions. I will state this initial number of battles after all teams are submitted. I reserve the right to change this if I am running short on time. Expect around four or five initial battles. After the initial battles the top four teams will move onto the championship round, where I will play each team three more times. Scores and records do not reset for the championship rounds. All undefeated teams will automatically move into the championship round, even if there are more than four. If there is either a tie or multiple undefeated teams after the championship rounds then those teams will enter a sudden death mode, where each team will play another battle until one team has more wins than the other in sudden death.

Undefeated means no losses. Sudden death cannot be won on a draw, if all teams draw or lose in a round of sudden death then another round will be necessary to determine the winner.

I hope that this is the final change to the rules, I think that It’ll work out.

Last Month’s Teams:
It’s already July 1st and I’ve only done three battles for each team, and I never got around to taking screenshots (I was planning on doing it on the fourth or fifth battle). I think for the sake of moving on I will keep it at three battles.

I always learn something when I do these pet of the month battles, what this month did for me is reinforce something that I already knew: I prefer guaranteed speed to a chance at speed. What that means is that I would rather have a really fast pet with less attack that I know is going to be faster than most pets, rather than a somewhat fast pet that has the chance of being faster than a lot of pets. I always run S/S rabbits, and I think after this POTM I will always run P/S or S/S foxes. There were just too many cases where I was wishing for more speed, even with the buff. If you chose a slower fox please don’t think I’m saying it was a bad choice or a bad team. It’s really a matter of preference, that’s all.

I think that the fox is a great support pet, but being limited to only one high-tier pet for its team mates left the fox with a lot of work to do.

L: Graves, Magical Crawdad, Ghastly Kid
W: Anodized Robo-Cub, Water Waveling, Dragonbone Hatchling
Uncanny cyclone did extremely well.
L: Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette
No avoidance meant I had to lose to a cheesy triple team.

The top four scores are 32, 24, 23, 23 and 22.5, of which three teams share the last score. I guess that means all three teams will go into the championship rounds. Due to this I plan on doing three more battles with each of these teams rather than four. Once again qwp play no factor in the outcome, I will not miss them.

The teams moving on are:
Crouching Fox Diving Terror
Dazzling Deep Disco Dance Dance Dominion
Fox em!
Maraka-Fox
Pigs Don’t Fly
Proving The Girth
Safety Dance

champ 4Final Score: 43 (4-2, 3 qwp)

It was a close battle.

Safety Dance
champ7Final Score: 42.5 (4-2, 2.5 qwp)
W: Robo-Chick, Jubling, Macabre Marionette
Each enemy pet countered each of mine. The stun saved the day.
L: Graves, Ghastly Kid, Jademist Dancer
Ended up one on one servant versus dancer but couldn’t pull it off.
W: Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette
Saw my snowman and fled. Would the snowman have been enough to trump the all the strong damage to the fox? We’ll never know thanks to the lack of spine.

It may be the first time ever that quality win points finally factor into the competition. Which is funny since this is the last month that system will be used. In this case I can see their merit: Fox em! beat three really tough teams in the course of going 5-1. Congrats caloides! Send me an email at dicodoggywow@gmail.com with the pet you want, please let me know if you are on a US or EU server, and please use the email that you want the pet gifted to.

I ended the fox experience on a strong note, I’m glad that I learned so much about using it. Thanks everyone for the teams!

In case you didn’t read the rules section the major changes are…

No team points (replaced by allowances)
No quality win points (good riddance)
Instead of five teams, four battles going to the championship rounds it’s now four teams, three battles.

Oh yeah, I know I keep saying that every team will appear in a write-up. I suck for not doing what I said I would. I will fit all of them in this month, I super ultimate pinky swear!

  2. Liwei says:

Not terribly surprised my team didn’t perform all that well. It was gimmicky back then, and I guess it hasn’t improved at all with the addition of WoD pets :p

Personally rooting for Safety Dance to win, just because the snowman is a fun pet to muck around with 😀

    • Wiff says:

It did get two free wins just for having a Snowman on the team. XD

    • Wiff says:

I debated whether to even make a submission given my uninspiring approach. Still, I’m interested to see how it measures up to comps like Sunlight and Rain Dance.

      Demolition Derpy
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
H/H Bone Serpent (Bone Barrage, Call Darkness, Nocturnal Strike)
P/S Iron Starlette (Wind-up, Powerball, Supercharge)

The fragility and low adaptability of the Servant of Demidos and Eye of Observation would too often be my downfall. Rather than attempting to prop up the Servant or build around it, a simple all-or-nothing burn comp renders both vices ultimately meaningless.

Powerball and three defensive racials make up this team’s only means of defense. I don’t picture many occasions where Call Darkness should interfere with Wind-Up or Siphon Anima given the timing of the general rotations and the serpent’s standard role as both the opening and closing pet. Ideally the serpent should be saved specifically for Mechs and the usual problem pets.

The FFF treatment is highly effective against AoE undead scrapping Fossilized Raptors before that second Bonestorm goes out which should relieve the Servant somewhat. The serpent is your general anti-barrier, weather counter, and sweep safeguard. The Servant would likely be your best bet against Blossoming Ancients and other defensive elementals.

  3. Liwei says:

    My entry for this month:

    Critikill

Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
Left Shark (Tail Slap, Tidal Wave, Rain Dance)
P/P Junglebeak (Peck, Rain Dance, Nocturnal Strike)

If you don’t have access to a Left Shark yet, then replace with a P/S Jademist Dancer (Steam Vent, Rain Dance, Geyser) – and also swap out Siphon Anima for Clean-Up on the Servant.

No real super synergy here, just three hard hitting pets with some attack type variety. Possibly could exploit Magic Sword’s 100% crit rate under Rain Dance too.

  4. tekulve says:

    Tekulve’s PotM entry

    I feel like such a heal !

Servant of Demidos- (magic sword/ siphon anima/ soul rush)
Son of sethe (plagued blood/ hiss/ drain blood)
Singing sunflower (solar beam/ photosynthesis/ sunlight)

you have some heavy hitting/heals and varied attacks…no multihit abilities but if sunlight stays up it should be fun

    • tekulve says:

I almost regret posting this team. Any time I play a heal comp of any sort it becomes a marathon..and poor entertainment, be it a win or a loss.

I played a Crawdad/JademistDancer/Lifelike mech toad for ‘fun’yesterday and got caught in a 70 rounder..just to watch my opponent (who let the ticker run down to 0 often) flee when their last pet had 70hp and was doomed to be ‘surged’

These kinds of battles make heal teams impractical for me..so I apologize in advance for any match that goes over 40 rounds.

  5. Vapid says:

    Sally Can Wait
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
Any S/S rabbit (Flurry, Dodge, Burrow)
H/P Zomstrok (Infected Claw, Rot, Carpnado)

I have been trying some new Zomstrok teams that use Rot instead. The whole point is to Rot the opposing pet on the undead round, then use the rabbit Flurry. I could also see starting with Carpnado, Rot, Swap to rabbit for Dodge/Flurry spam, return for another Carpnado etc.

Never used the Demidos, so I am just guessing what move set is best.

  6. Josh says:

I’m disappointed about Under the Radar. Whilst not as robust as the traditional clonedance builds it’s the kind of team that can generate large winning streaks with the right opponents. Unfortunately it met the wrong teams but then that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Let’s try again:

    Hey, Demidos. I Quit!

P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
S/S Nether Faerie Dragon (Slicing Winds, Life Exchange, Moonfire)
H/P Graves (Skull Toss, Consume Corpse, Grave Destruction)

Not the best team as it relies on a lot of things working in its favour. Here are the different factors to consider…

You can start with either Graves or NFD depending on opponent’s line-up. If they do some damage and backline then they both setup for SoD nicely. Low health pets will be quickly dispatched with Magic Sword and Soulrush, whilst Siphon Anima can provide healing in between. All will be boosted by Moonlight if it has been cast by the NFD.
Later in the fight Graves can consume the corpse of any fallen foes (hopefully boosted by Moonlight), whilst doing more AE damage and generally sweeping.

I am less confident with this team than with the last, but then the last ended up sucking so maybe I should just stop trying to predict a completely different meta!

  7. tekulve says:

Just a note about foxes…I get why you like pure speed breeds…your meta is littered with fliers and speedy others

My meta caught on to the Fragment of Anger very early on, which has made fliers rare and even Teroclaws are a little less often used…the overall result is less need for speed. When I do use my p/b foxling, I often dont even need to use dazzling dance. The fjord worg pup and h/h young talbuk are also fun vs undead but the fox seems to last so long

    • Discodoggy says:

I can see the usefulness of the extra attack against undead. Like you said, I battle in a speedy meta. Every time I out speed a full health Teroclaw Hatchling with my S/S fox I get excited.

  8. Corndog says:

    Magical Mystery Tour

P/P Servant of Demidos (Arcane Explosion, Clean-Up, Soulrush)
H/H Ghastly Kid (Hoof, Ethereal, Haunt)
H/P Hogs (Vicious Slice, Consume Corpse, Headbutt)

I just got Hogs on Monday and figured he was easy enough to get, if you can’t let me know and I’ll change my team. I also went with a different set of moves on the Demidos to give you something different to use, but Lightning Shield just never did it for me while testing any of the Demi teams so I passed on it.

  9. Corndog says:

And just an idea, but I’m assuming most people here use Rematch. I figured it would be easier on you and anyone who wanted to try a team if we also included that text string.

  10. gsv says:

Almost missed it this month… hectic times…

    Gratz caloides…

    Demi More
P/S Infinite Whelpling (Sleeping Gas, Healing Flame, Darkflame)
P/B Hydraling (Tail Slap, Swallow You Whole, Shell Armor)
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)

    Rematch: (Great idea Corndog)
    Demi More:0:1161:594:168:792:1541:424:276:1380:1601:1085:937:752:

May the RNG gods be favourable

  11. Lyraat says:

    Serve or Feed the Grave
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Clean-Up, Soulrush)
H/P Graves (Skull Toss, Consume Corpse, Grave Destruction)
H/P Pygmy Cow (Stampede, Feed, Udder Destruction)

Servant has way too low health to be anything other than an opening pet (assuming the opponent has any kind of AoE). Soulrush, Clean-Up, Magic Sword until dead. Graves next. Destruction or Consume Corpse (depending on health) then the other. Swap to the cow. Feed if low on health, Udder Destruction for the stun, Stampede if opponent has avoidance up. I love Feed and Udder Destruction on a pet with Shattered Defenses. Either forces the opponent to swap or take one or two giant hits. Once the cow dies, back to Graves to finish the match if needed.

Not sure why the cow isn’t at least a third tier pet. The most OP pet in the game and a highly underrated pet? What is this “synergy” everyone talks about? 😀

  12. Celya says:

First of all, I need to point out that I came here to post… exactly Corndog’s team. It had a different name, but… Hogs…

    Secondly, my entry: Demifrost

P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
P/P Frostwolf Ghostpup (Scratch, Haunting Song, Ghostly Bite)
P/B Royal Peachick (Savage Talon, Arcane Storm, Feign Death)

      DemiFIRE:

P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Cleanup, Soulrush)
P/P Cinderpup (Flame Breath, Crouch, Volcano)
P/S Chi-Chi (Fire Quills, Wild Magic, Feign Death)

I guess I could have ran the Imp, but where’s the fun in that: We’re bloody DemiFIRE! And we shall beat the frost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      DemiFIRE:1:2712:2196:1048:863:2641:230:2508:765:2522:2481:700:679:

      • Celya says:

Haha, this made me laugh so much I choked in my coffee!

Edit: Just because it was unexpected, not because I have a way of predicting how the battles will go. And because it reminds me of Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice” poem.

        Love me the edit option.

  13. Kayhos says:

Trying my hand at this for a first time, it’s somewhat “turtly”.

    Luke, I am your Master
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Touch of Anima, Soulrush)
H/P Zomstrok (Creeping Fungus, Shell Shield, Carpnado)
P/P Emperor Crab (Snap, Healing Wave, Shell Shield)

    Thanks for sharing your experiences

  14. Wiff says:

At first Servant of Demidos as POTM seemed untimely given the prevalence of MPDs and massive backline damage, but now three new Manafiends have been announced for the patch!

P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
S/S Alpine Foxling (Flurry, Howl, Dazzling Dance)

    First time submitting a team.
Hope this one doesn’t get wrecked too badly.
Had a hard time deciding between Howl or Crouch.

Thanks for the submission Biscuit, but this month’s competition is almost over. The deadline for submitting a team is the 11th of the month. Keep an eye out for the August POTM competition, which should be out tomorrow.

I lost some data again, so I’m frantically trying to catch up and do at least five battles per team. Somehow pressing “save draft” on WordPress is hard for me.

  17. Discodoggy says:

Hey I’ve got some news. I’m really busy right now getting ready for the fall semester and I’m also going to go on a short trip next week. This, along with the fact that I lost two battles per team worth of data means that I can’t do as many battles as I would like. I was sort of stressing about finishing up, and one should never stress about pet battles :). So I’ve decided to extend the Servant Of Demidos POTM #7 into August. POTM #8 will be in September.

That means if anyone still wants to join POTM #7 you still can. Just make sure to get your teams in by the 11th.

    Thanks for your understanding.

Hey, real life happens man. :)
      We all understand.

Do I have to resubmit my Sword in the Sand team?

      • Discodoggy says:

No, you don’t need to. A mini-trip to see a few friends in LA and the desert helped with the real life outlook. It’s always good to see something different for a few days.

    Shameless
P/P Curious Wolvar Pup (Bite, Snap Trap, Whirlwind)
H/P Graves (Skull Toss, BONESTORM, Grave Destruction)
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Clean-Up, Soulrush)

This doesn’t make me a terrible person, does it?
