Mini-Tryouts: Spuds McBurnzie
H/P Soul Of The Forge (Deep Burn, Extra Plating, Flamethrower)
S/S Red Dragonhawk (Quills, Conflagrate, Flamethrower)
H/P Parched Lizard (Quick Attack, Conflagrate, Ravage)

I’ve been stalking the Soul Of The Forge since close to launch; today it appeared like the prices weren’t dropping much so I finally picked one up. This is the second team that made with it (the first had a Stunted Direhorn rather than the lizard). I don’t see this team as being destined for greatness, it’s more about having some fun with the new pets and a little synergy. The strategy is to use Flamethrower to make the ground burn then use the two moves that benefit from the burning: Conflagrate and Deep Burn. When the enmey pet is burning Conflagrate hits a second time and Deep Burn does double damage. There’s also some coverage on this team with Quills covering the elemental against aquatics and the beast doing strong damage against critters. Remember critters are a soft counter to all the elemental damage. I wasn’t sure about the breed of Parched Lizard to use. It also comes in an S/S breed. I was contemplating using an S/S breed (325 speed) with Claw in the first slot, but most of the critters I see are faster than 325 speed so I’d be better off with Quick Attack anyways, I might as well go with some extra health and power.

Battle 1
vs. Grunty, Magical Crawdad, Disgusting Oozeling
112814AI was going to be off to a bad start with a loss but my opponent handed me a win by misusing Wish. The crawdad cast the heal then Grunty came in to the Wish but died on the swap to my dragonhawk. Quills crit the Magical Crawdad for big damage. This damage combined with their mistake was enough to make my opponent flee. Even though I didn’t really deserve the win I’m always happy to see the crawdad lose.

Battle 2
vs. Anubisath Idol, Lil’ Ragnaros, Clockwork Gnome
112814CSoul Of The Forge completely dominated this one. It helped that my opponent started with the mech and kept in it against the elemental. Repair was cast but that wasn’t going to save the gnome against the strong damage. The gnome swapped out for the idol before dying. Another hated pet did poorly, it must be my lucky night. Too many low hits against the Extra Plating made it difficult to make an big impact on my Soul Of The Forge. Lil Ragnaros came in to try to salvage some pride but he wasn’t equipped with Magma Trap so he was fairly harmless. My opponent fled again, this time I didn’t even need to swap pets.
Record: 2-0

Battle 3
vs. Clockwork Gnome, Fire Beetle, Voodoo Figurine
112814BAnother gnome who tried to repair through elemental damage. Even so, this battle was closer than the last two. This team is doing great damage very quickly. The only lasted twelve rounds, though I suppose it had something to do with the gnome taking so much elemental damage. Ahh, I’m losing steam fast, something needed to be taken care of between this battle and the last so it’s much later than I expected to be up. This team is fun and I wanted to do more with it so I’ll continue with the tryouts sometime during the next few days.
Record: 3-0
