Today’s Team: Darkbeam
H/S Dark Phoenix Hatchling (Laser, Immolate, Conflagrate)
S/S Silver Dragonhawk Hatchling (Quills, Conflagrate, Flamethrower)
H/H Spirit Crab (Snap, Whirlpool, Shell Shield)

Strategy:
I’ve been thinking of new ways to defeat Death Adders when I remembered that Laser always hits due to its 200% accuracy. This will hit through Blinding Poison, albeit for small damage. I decided to go with the Immolate/Conflagrate combo on the Dark Phoenix so I could throw in the Dragonhawk for some Conflagrate synergy. This will also give me some more anti-Adder action. The S/S Silver Dragonhawk is one of the few decent pets faster than the Adder. There’s also some coverage synergy with Quills, although Quills isn’t that great of an aquatic counter when most of the aquatics that I encounter are crocs (with Surge that negates the extra attack from the speed) and Emperor Crabs (with shields that block most of the multi attacks). I still like Quills more than the 90% accuracy Claw. If I don’t choose Claw then I really need something to take out critters since they are a soft counter to all of the elemental damage. I was looking for a beast attack and some tankiness since the Dragonhawk is so fragile. If only there were a high hp pet with a beast attack and an undead racial. I think you can tell where I’m going with this. Another job for my Spirit Crab! I’ll probably start with the Phoenix to Immolate then Conflagrate and see where that takes me. If I do run into an Adder I’ll probably start with the Dragonhawk to use Flamethrower then Conflagrate if not blinded.

Concerns:
This team may have some trouble with Idols and Sandstorm. The Dark Phoenix has 1627 hp but still feels rather fragile thanks to no avoidance or mitigation. I’ve never been too impressed with the Dark Phoenix while facing it, hopefully I can get it to work for me.

The Opposing Team:
H/H Anubisath Idol
P/S Bandicoon
S/S Lil’ Bad Wolf

The Battle:
More and more Idols lately, this isn’t a good sign. Win or lose Sandstorm is just annoying. I wasn’t sure what my opponent was doing with this team so I played it safe and started with the Crab instead of the Phoenix. The Wolf came out to meet it. The Wolf Howled and my Crab Snapped. There’s no way I’m staying in with Shattered Defenses so I swapped to the Phoenix. The Claw missed on the swap then my opponent brought in the Bandicoon who took an Immolate. Smart move by my opponent, the DoT is applied but it’s weak damage. I brought in my Crab who took two strong hits from the Tongue Lash. One was a crit, ouch. Perhaps I underestimated my Spirit Crab’s ability to take out critters. I should have gone with a beast! Oh well, I applied my shield and duked it out with the Bandicoon. It only took two Snaps and the DoT ticks to take out the critter. I’m not sure why it didn’t use Survival, I know I would have.

121813AThe Wolf came out to face my Crab again, this time it Clawed while I put down a Whirlpool then swapped to my Dragonhawk. It took a Claw on the swap then cast Flamethrower and got Howled again. The Dragonkin racial procced so the Dragonhawk was able to take out the Wolf. I was pretty sure the Wolf would die but it’s still scary to stand in there with Shattered Defenses. So now the only pet that’s left is the Idol, which was packing Demolish and Rupture. I have three pets alive but I’m still not confident about the win. First comes the Dark Hatchling, it Immolates, Conflagrates then spams Laser until death. It’s able to get the Idol down to around 900 hp. Not bad. I bring out the Spirit Crab to Whirlpool then Snap on its undead round. Looking good. The Dragonhawk then cast Flamethrower before the Whirlpool went off which again procced the Dragonkin racial. In a Sandstorm it’s always a bit scary going for the killshot. Will the Idol get lucky with a Sandstorm miss? Not this time my dog faced nemesis! Conflagrate finishes off the Idol for a close win.
