Summer 2017 500 battles of data

Once again, I used a spreadsheet to keep track of the pets that I face in the PvP pet battle queue. I did this manually over 500 battles, so there may be a few mistakes here and there, but to the best of my knowledge the data is accurate. Here goes.

Next are the pets that did the best against me. This requires a little explanation. Overall my record was 362-133-5. This means that my opponents beat me 26.6% of the time. It was Poofah’s idea to include the ratio of each pet’s win percentage to the overall win percentage of my opponents. I called it the relative ratio for lack of a better name. This gives a better indicator of how well a pet does. For example, the Vengeful Porcupette had a 56.3 win percentage. Doesn’t sound too great, but when you compare that to the 26.6 overall win percentage with a ratio you can see that the Vengeful Porcupette is really good: 56.3/26.6=2.12, so the Vengeful Porcupette was more than twice as likely to beat me as a random pet encountered in the queue. Here are the pets that appeared at least 10 times listed in order of their win percentages:

pet – w/l/d – win % – relative ratio
Nightshade Sproutling 7 5 0 58.3% 2.19
Vengeful Porcupette 9 7 0 56.3% 2.12

Here is the link to the actual spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kveAaHjw0Tj5dOciakVKtdxLtVlNIkB4GpoMKSarLIY/edit?usp=sharing

Sheet 1 is where I kept the data, please note that some of the magic pets are listed as mechanicals (they both start with “m”, oops). On the “family data bottom” tab I used for family info I realized that something was wrong so I fixed them (hopefully all of them).

If you want to compare past data,

As far as analysis goes here are a few things that jumped out at me:

a) the drop in undead wins, but that makes sense due to the nerf. (edited)

b) valks are the most common pet again. go away.

c) the Vengeful Porcupette gave me loads of trouble, however it was often used with a tier 1 pet (mostly Bone Serpents and Wicked Souls). Still it’s impressive that it made it that high on the list.

d) the Nightshade Sproutling was almost always paired with a Bone Serpent. Great pet, but it doesn’t really belong at the top of the list in my opinion.

Disco’s Three
Some of the new pets in action.

1:25 – Deblightful Breath
Blightbreath, Droplet Of Y’Shaarj, Chaos Pup
vs. Iron Starlette, Cinder Pup, Chrominius

This was close than a lot of the breath battles I’ve done with Blightbreath.

8:30 – Soul Writers
Fiendish Imp, Enchanted Pen, Wicked Soul
vs. Royal Moth, Bone Serpent, Hydraling

I think the outcome of this battle could have been very different.

13:10 – Sharpie
Snarly, Curious Wolvar Pup, Sharptalon Hatchling
vs. Unborn Val’kyr, Snowfeather Hatchling, Servant Of Demidos

Maybe I should have started with Snarly.

PBL Season One

Pet Battle League Season One
One Wild Team To Rule Them All

It’s finally here, our first pet battle league, brought to you by the “of the Pet Battle Forum” guild on Cenarion Circle-US and pvppetbattles.com.

Who is eligible to join this league? Anyone who loves PvP pet battling and enjoys some friendly competition. You do not have to be a member of the guild, you do not have to be a poster on pvppetbattles.com, but you will have to make an alliance toon on Cenarion Circle for the sake of convenince.

For season one we’re going to keep it a simple as possible. You get one team, comprised of three wild caught pets, with no duplicate pet families. You can interchange breeds and moves between battles, but not pets. Pets with different names but the same move set are not counted as the same pet.

The league will be a round robin format, where each participant plays every other participant twice. You can do both battles in one meeting, or you can choose a second time to meet up after the first has been completed. Points will be earned similar to a soccer league: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. Battles that last for more than 75 rounds can be ended by either player, which will result in a draw. Disconnects are considered a loss. Zepp and myself will settle disputes, but hopefully there will be none. Any disputes that can’t be settled will result in a draw.

After all of the matches have been played, the top four teams will enter a single elimination playoff mode, with 1st vs. 4th, 2nd vs. 3rd (numbers represent place in league table). Then a championship and a third place battle will take place.

The prizes are as follows:

1st – level 1 rare Servant Of Demidos
2nd – 1000 gold
3rd – 500 gold
4th – 100 gold

Prizes provided by Discodoggy.

I want to stress that this a friendly league. Please be kind when battling other participants.

About the guild: please don’t feel obligated to join for the sake of the tournament. If you would not have joined otherwise, then don’t. The requirements for joining the guild are a love of pet battles along with the desire and ability to be nice to your guild mates, with the emphasis placed on being nice. If guilds in general are not your thing, then don’t join. If you can’t be polite, don’t join.

How do you sign up? Make an alliance toon (preferably human if you are only using it for the league) on Cenarion Circle, send Discodoge in game mail with your team and a team name. I have already sent Zepp and Darmand my team so that I will not be able to make a counter team based on everyone else’s entries. I will list players as they enter, but I won’t list their teams until everyone has entered.

The sign-up period starts now, it will last until Thursday, January 7th at 11:00 pm PST. I will then post everyone’s teams. People will then have until Saturday, January 30th at 11:00 am PST to battle. A date/time will then be determined for the four playoff teams to battle.

The biggest problem that I foresee is people not being able to be on at the same time. Please make arrangements here in this thread on when and where to meet up. If a time is set and one person doesn’t show, then the no show will be considered a forfeit. If two people can’t decide on a time to meet, then this will result in a double forfeit (both lose). This is the part of the competition that I am least comfortable with, so if anyone has any better ideas then please share.

Finally, please do not sign up if you are not willing to make a commitment to battle many other players. If twenty people sign up, that means you will have to battle nineteen people twice, so thirty eight battles. Over the course of three weeks it shouldn’t be that hard to do.

Good luck and I look forward to your entries.

If I forgot anything important then please let me know.

League Rules Discussion

After this month I will no longer be doing the POTM competition. I like it because it’s somewhat interactive, but in reality I’m doing all of the battling. While fun, it’s a lot to do. So why should I do all of the work for something only marginally interactive. Why not do less work for something even more interactive? After I finish the current POTM I will be replacing it with a pet battling league.

Here’s what I envision: each player will make a team based on certain restrictions, similar to the restrictions of the POTM. Players will sign up privately with their team by notifying me before the league begins. After all submissions are in everyone will play each other at least once in a round robin style. I’m thinking when players battle each other it can be best of three. I’m thinking that players will contact each other in order to play one another, they can meet up to battle then post the results. I will keep records. Wins are three points, draws one, losses zero points. After the round robin portion is done then the top four players can go into a tournament style playoff to determine the winner. Winner gets a store pet. I’d like to keep the prize small so it’s only slightly competitive and mostly for fun and bragging rights.

That’s the overall idea, but there are a ton of details to hash out.

My biggest concern is time zone differences. What if players can’t meet up, how will we handle that? What if people take too long do their battles, what sort of time restraints should there be?

I plan on participating myself, I will need a volunteer to send my team to before the submissions start coming in, or else I could just make the best counter team.

You saw how long it took to get the POTM working right, I’d like to get as many possible kinks out of the way before we start. Any problems that anyone can identify?

What about a name? Being a big soccer fan the name “Pet Battle Premier League” has some appeal to me, but it’s not that catchy. “Spirit Crab Battle League”? 😛

POTM #8

September 2015: Stonegrinder
stonegrinderI decided to go with Stonegrinder this month because a) it can be pretty damn good and b) I think it can lead to different times of teams. In the first slot you can hope to get lucky with Screeching Gears or can set up a DoT and bleed with Woodchipper. Blood In The Water? Wild Magic? You can do a lot with Woodchipper. The second slot is an even split AoE, so who wouldn’t want that? I guess you could use Supercharge into Clean-Up. Not my first choice of builds, but hey, it’s your team. For the last choice you have Clean-Up or Rebuild. I don’t think that I’ve ever used Rebuild, but maybe you like the idea of triple mechs. Triple anything is rolling the dice, but maybe that’s your thing. Just try to make the best team possible so I can win a lot! If it doesn’t happen I won’t hold it against you, this a fun competition, no pressure allowed :)

How does the contest work? Each participant will submit one team that includes the pet of the month. Teams must be in by the 10th of the month. Once a team is submitted there is no changing the move set, so please be careful with your submission. No duplicate pets are allowed.

Please use this format:
Team Name (optional)
H/P Fragment Of Anger (Seethe, Spiritfire Beam, Spirit Spikes)
P/S Stonegrinder (Woodchipper,Thunderbolt,Clean-Up)
P/P Twilight Fiendling (Creepy Chomp, Crreping Ooze, Siphon Life)

… as opposed to:
Team Name (optional)
H/P Fragment Of Anger (2,1,2)
P/S Stonegrinder (2,1,1)
P/P Twilight Fiendling (1,2,2)

I like everything to be uniform and the latter creates an extra level of work for me. Thanks :)

There will be a “pet allowance”. The allowance will tell you how many non, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd-tier pet(s) you can use on your team. You can always use pets that are on a tier lower than the allowed pets. For example, if you are allowed one 2nd-tier pet then you could choose a non or 3rd-tier pet in its place.

This month’s pet allowance:
1 2nd-tier pet and 1 3rd-tier pet
OR
1 1st-tier pet and 1 non-tier pet

So your options look like this:

POTM
1st-tier
non-tier

or

POTM
2nd-tier pet
3rd-tier pet

or

POTM
2nd-tier
non-tier

or

POTM
3rd-tier
non-tier

or

POTM
non-tier pet
non-tier pet

You don’t get anything extra for choosing non-tier pets so you might as well use the allowance. Or you could choose two non-tier pets and show off your ability to find hidden gems in that long list of pets. It’s up to you!

You can’t use any teams that I’ve used before in “Disco’s Battles”. If you happen to make a team that I’ve used then I’ll let you know.

Here is the tier list: Top & High Tier List

Each win will be worth ten points, each draw will be worth five points. A stalemate will be considered a draw.

Initially I will play each submitted team an equal number of times. The number of times that I play each team will depend on the number of submissions and how busy my current schedule is. Expect around four or five initial battles. After the initial battles the top four teams will move onto the championship round, where I will play each team three more times. If there is a tie for fourth place then I will either have some sort of tiebreaker, or I will only take the top three teams depending upon how much time I have. I will do the same for ties for third and second place if more than three teams are tied for these places.

Scores and records do not reset for the championship rounds. All undefeated teams will automatically move into the championship round, even if there are more than four. If there is either a tie or multiple undefeated teams after the championship rounds then those teams will enter a sudden death mode, where each team will play another battle until one team has more wins than the other in sudden death.

Undefeated means no losses. Sudden death cannot be won on a draw, if all teams draw or lose in a round of sudden death then another round will be necessary to determine the winner.

Last Month’s Teams
The SoD was somewhat of a let down. I hadn’t used it much, and this competition reminded me why. It’s one of those almost good pets. It seems like it could be good, but in practice I had a really hard time using it. I’m not slamming your teams, mind you, I’m slamming the Servant Of Demidos. The teams were good and most of the time it was a matter of how well they could carry the SoD’s dead weight. Can you tell how I feel about this pet?

A Sword in the Sand
H/H Anubisath Idol (Crush, Sandstorm, Rupture)
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
S/S Alpine Foxling (Flurry, Howl, Dazzling Dance)

Record: 4-2, 40 points
swordsandL: Weebomination, MPD, Creepy Crate
Close battle, but just too much undead damage for the idol to handle.
W: Pandaren Water Spirit, Iron Starlette, Crusher
This is what I love about POTM, playing (and winning) with pets that I don’t normally use like the idol.
W: Clockwork Gnome, Fel Flame, Electrified Razortooth
After idol took out gnome my opponent fled. Battlers these days!
W: Weebomination, Bucktooth Flapper, Yu’la
It’s always nice to see interesting teams, even if it did include the Weeboremenation.
W: Bandicoon, Bandicoon, Bandicoon
Well there’s something you don’t see every day.
L: Fragment Of Anger, Sunblade Micro-Sentry, Dread Hatchling
See 8/30/15

Critikill
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)

L: Graves, Fiendish Imp, Ghastly Kid
CC Graves is the hardest team to beat in my current meta. I couldn’t do it here.
W: Anubisath Idol, Chrominius, Nexus Whelpling
Chrominius took out shark with Surge Of Power then SoD used recovery time to heal.
W: Gilnean Raven, Forest Moth, Amethyst Shale Hatchling
The magic damage against the two birds was awesome.
L: Bonkers, Arctic Hare, Hydraling
Thanks to a stun Bonkers was able to dominate. I hate Bonkers. The Junglebeak tried to catch up but I was too far behind.
W: Graves, Nightshade Sproutling, Alpine Foxling
First round stun on Graves helped a lot.

Demi More
P/S Infinite Whelpling (Sleeping Gas, Healing Flame, Darkflame)

W: Unborn Val’kyr, Unborn Val’kyr, Chrominius
Hydraling laughed at Haunt.
W: Peddlefeet, Magical Broom, Lil’ Ragnaros
The dragon healed after a Shot Through The Heart for over 900 health.
L: Fiendish Imp, Molten Corgi, Creepy Crate
I love using imps, I hate facing imps. Stupid imp made me lose to a corgi.
L: Bonkers, Death Adder Hatchling, Teroclaw hatchling
With my fastest speed being 273 I had absolutely no chance. Rather than take me out quick this player made a bunch of unnecessary swaps to prolong the battle.
W: Living Sandling, Frostwolf Ghostpup, Stinker
SoD won an important coin toss against Stinker which gave me the edge.

DemiFIRE
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Cleanup, Soulrush)
P/P Cinderpup (Flame Breath, Crouch, Volcano)
P/S Chi-Chi (Fire Quills, Wild Magic, Feign Death)

See 7/18/15
W: Death Adder Hatchling, ?, ?
The DAH could’ve done better with the blind. I like the build on the Cinderpup, even though there were no stuns. (I didn’t type in the other pets for some reason)
W: Stitched Pup, Chrominius, Ikky
SoD took out Chrominius without losing any health thanks to stun.
L: Fiendish Imp, Teroclaw Hatchling, Jademist Dancer
The reason the Teroclaw Hatchling has such a poor record against me is because people don’t use it properly. This person used it properly.
W: Bandicoon, Bandicoon, Bandicoon
The first time I faced this team it was marginally cute. That sentiment is fading fast.
L: Graves, Nightshade Sproutling, Alpine Foxling
A decent enough team to lose to.

Demifrost
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)

Damn MPDs are tough without a way to take down the decoy.
W: Kun-Lai Runt, Minfernal, Onyxian Whelpling
Take away the KLR’s stun and it’s got nothing.
W: Curious Wolvar Pup, Unborn Val’kyr, Teroclaw Hatchling
Great win! The arcane winds made the trap somewhat useless.
D: Rotten Little Helper, Winter’s Little Helper, Frosty
I feel like I should have won, the humanoid racial actually made the difference here.
W: Hopling, Bone Serpent, Gilnean Raven
I was scared darkness would steal the moment with a miss, but Hopling took a Ghostly Bite to the face for the win.

Demimore Macarena
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
H/P Trunks (Smash, Ethereal, Avalanche)
S/S Tolai Hare (Flurry, Dodge, Burrow)

Record: 3-3, 30 points
demimoormacarenaL: Royal Moth, Amber Moth, Luyu Moth
A very annoying loss, I played well, had the win all set up until a crit killed my rabbit prematurely.
L: Fiendish Imp, Ghastly Kid, Scalded Basilisk Hatchling
This is one of my own teams, “Done Did Kid”. At the time of writing my own record with that team is 52-1, so it’s not easy to beat. I had a 12.5% chance of winning on the last round: win coin toss, then stun, but I lost the coin toss.
W: Unborn Val’kyr, MPD, Emerald Proto Whelp
After avoiding the CoD and Haunt with the rabbit my opponent fled.
W: Lil’ Ragnaros, Unborn Val’kyr, Sky-Bo
The rabbit countered all three of the enemy pets in some way.
W: Albino Chimaerling, Mudback Calf, Sister Of Temptation
The rabbit can sure sweep well.
L: Fel Flame, Soul Of The Forge, Elementium Geode

W: Fragment Of Anger, Fragment Of Anger, Ghastly Kid
I won an important coin toss that brought the kid to zero health, disallowing the Haunt.
W: Qiraji Guardling, Anubisath Idol, Pandaren Fire Spirit
Siphon Anima after the guardling’s Reckless Strike was a nice healing boost.
W: Curious Wolvar Pup, Unborn Val’kyr, Teroclaw Hatchling
Instead of swapping in the low health valk to eat the super nuke my opponent decided to eat it with the almost full health Teroclaw Hatchling. Thanks.
W: Death Talon Whelpguard, Nether Fairie Dragon, Lil’ Bad Wolf
My opinion of the Iron Starlette is changing now that I’m using it a bit. Maybe it’s not as over rated as I thought.
W: Bone Serpent, Gilnean Raven, Hopling
SoD and Hopling cancelled out, from there I was good to go.

Hey, Demidos. I Quit!
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)

Slicing Winds was atrocious and I let NFD die too early.
W: Bronze Whelpling, Unborn Val’Kyr, Corefire Imp

W: Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette, Warbot
The SoD ate many Wind-Ups. It was sort of crazy how much damage was wasted on the magic racial.
W: Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Unborn Val’kyr, Lovebird Hatchling
I was way behind before Consume Corpse heal then double Grave Destruction kill helped me back in. Still needed stun to win, got it.
L: Living Sandling, Frostwolf Ghostpup, Stinker
Didn’t see myself losing this one when I went into it. Moonlight helped my opponent’s healing and Slicing Winds failed me. A round of 148 damage can really cramp one’s style.
W: Emperor Crab, Cinder Pup, Trunks
When Elekks Fly missed twice.

I feel like such a heal!
Servant of Demidos- (magic sword/ siphon anima/ soul rush)

W: Bronze Whelpling, Unborn Val’Kyr, Corefire Imp
Instant flee.
L: Teroclaw Hatchling, Sky-Bo, Scourged Whelpling
Thirty-two rounds of pain caused by the Teroclaw Hatchling.
L: MPD, Stunted Direhorn, Fragment Of Anger
I couldn’t pull off the upset.
L: Bone Serpent, Death Adder Hatchling, Searing Scorchling
See 8/2/15
L: Ghastly Kid, Teroclaw Hatchling, Weebomination
The best part of pet battles are all of the friendly people you meet in the queue (see screenshot). This was a thirty round loss. The names, however, made me get out Owngrinders for a big spanking. Maybe next time ask mommy and daddy for a credit card so you can buy pets too instead of getting jealous.

Luke, I am your Master
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Touch of Anima, Soulrush)

P/P Emperor Crab (Snap, Healing Wave, Shell Shield)

Record: 4-2, 40 points

Full health crab came in to face 275 health moth at end of battle, sleep for the loss.
W: Frostwolf Ghostpup, Fossilized Hatchling, Gilnean Raven
The raven triumphed in the one on one versus SoD, it was sad. Crab was good enough to earn win.
W: I was way behind thanks to a few Slippery Ice misses but the Emperor Crab stepped up and won. Belly Slide Hitting twice out of seven probably had something to do with it.
W: Feline Familiar, Spectral Porcupette, Brilliant Kaliri
A tough battle due to Zomstrok having no regular attack, but still managed to win.
W: Curious Wolvar Pup, Crusher, Ore Eater
See 8/2/15
L: Pandaren Water Spirit, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Lovebird Hatchling
I can’t remember the last time that I lost to a Pandaren Water Spirit. No avoidance and no regular attack on Zomstrok really hurt me.

Magical Mystery Tour

H/P Hogs (Vicious Slice, Consume Corpse, Headbutt)

Consume Corpse was used effectively, a couple of sleeps made the battle difficult.
D: Fragment Of Anger, Fragment Of Anger, Ghastly Kid
Stunned once and lost a coin toss that killed SoD.
W: Fishy, Snarly, Darkmoon Zeppelin
I needed a high hit from Clean-Up on the last round to win. I got it.
W: Magical Crawdad, Singing Sunflower, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling
Ugg. Fifty-four rounds of healing. So much healing. Hogs had more than half health, the kid had a few hundred left. Fix sunny day and Photosythesis please.
W: Hyjal Wisp, Kun-Lai Runt, Forest Spiderling
See 8/2/15
D: Unborn Val’kyr, Fiendish Imp, Magical Broom
Could’ve won with a stun on the valk, instead Hogs killed the imp then took a big hit from the CoD to die.

Sally Can Wait
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Siphon Anima, Soulrush)
S/S Alpine Hare (Flurry, Dodge, Burrow)
H/P Zomstrok (Infected Claw, Rot, Carpnado)

Record: 6-0, 60 points

After taking a few strong attacks and realizing I wasn’t Derpy McDogdester my opponent fled.
W: Bonkers, Ikky, Wild Crimson Hatchling
Zomstrok took out dragon and most of Ikky before expiring. Easy clean-up.
W: Fossilized Hatchling, Weebomination, Graves
Holy carp! Did that really just happen? There was one stun from SoD, it helped since I only one by one round.
W: Grinder Molten Corgi, Mudback Calf
Barely won thanks to Flurry hitting only twice EVERY time. It was bad.
W: Anubisath Idol, Nether Fairie Dragon, Chrominius
Didn’t use the rabbit, an easy win.
W: Nexus Whelpling, Emerald Whelpling, Amber Moth

Serve or Feed the Grave
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Clean-Up, Soulrush)
H/P Graves (Skull Toss, Consume Corpse, Grave Destruction)
H/P Pygmy Cow (Stampede, Feed, Udder Destruction)

Record: 4-2, 40 points
serveorfeedW: Iron Starlette, Hogs, Squirrel
The magic racial was used twice against the starlette’s nuke.
W: Death Talon Whelpguard, Anubisath Idol, Restless Shadeling
SoD killed DTW in 3 rounds w/o taking any damage, opponent fled.
W: Bone Serpent, Gilnean Raven, Darkmoon Zeppelin
EVERY Skull Toss hit low. The Pigmy Cow took down the decoy with stampede then got off a big heal and big damage attack while Shattered Defense was up. Love that sequence.
L: Yellow Moth, Anubisath Idol, Magic Broom
This was me playing bad. I face so many imps and so few brooms that I was expecting the pet in the second slot to come in from the force swap, not the highest health pet. I also wasted my Soulrush on a cocoon. Like I said, I played poorly.
W: Weebomination, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Fragment Of Anger
I thought I played it wrong by starting with the critter. I didn’t. SoD never came out, it just took damage on the back line. Oh what a lovely site to see that Weebomination running away.
L: Crusher, Hydraling, Frostwolf Ghostpup
See 8/30/15

Shameless
P/P Curious Wolvar Pup (Bite, Snap Trap, Whirlwind)
H/P Graves (Skull Toss, BONESTORM, Grave Destruction)
P/P Servant of Demidos (Magic Sword, Clean-Up, Soulrush)

Record: 2-3-1, 25 points
shamelssL: MPD, Graves, Peddlefeet
I didn’t really know how to use the SoD, having two low health pets hurt against this team.
W: Emerald Proto Whelp, Anubisath Idol, Fishy
Opponent fled after Curious Wolvar Pup killed EPW without taking any damage while getting off two AoEs.
L: Murkalot, MPD, Graves
What a huge bummer. Murkalot was on the back line within kill range of the SoD, all Graves needed to do was do 280 to the MPD on its immortal round. It did 271, the MPD survived with 9 health and took out the SoD. So lame!
W: Yellow Moth, Anubisath Idol, Magic Broom
I got some revenge for the last loss. The trap went off at a good time for me.
L: Weebomination, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Fragment Of Anger
The rng didn’t go my way in the initial face-off of pup versus FoA and I ended up losing badly.
D: Bone Serpent, Qiraji Guardling, Trunks

Championship Rounds
The top four teams are supposed to move on. Unfortunately, there were six teams tied for fourth place. I didn’t specifically say in the POTM #7 what would happen in a case like this, so I spelled it out specifically above. Sorry fourth place folks, in this case I’m going to only take the top three teams. Thanks for your understanding :)

Congrats to Demolition Derpy (Wiff), Magical Mystery Tour (Corndog) and Sally Can Wait (Vapid)! I’ll do at least three more battles with each of your teams to determine the winner. Good luck!

Demolition Derpy
W: Sentinel’s Companion, Giant Bone Spider, Voodoo Figurine
I traded the Iron Starlette for the Voodoo Figurine, the SoD took out the Bone Spider, the Bone Serpent was easily able to finish the bird for a win.

W: Unborn Val’kyr, Teroclaw hatchling, Lil’ Ragnaros
Rag and the SoD took each other out so it was 2v2. My Iron Starlette ramped up its speed against the valk, then took out the Teroclaw Hatchling with a weak 1134 damage.

L: Oasis Moth, Luyu Moth, Amber Moth
What a bummer to get the first loss to such a lamer team. I queued with Dropping Birds, Too, my anti-flyer team. The Lost of Lordaeron took out one moth and left the other two with around 200 each.

Magical Mystery Tour
W: Giant Bone Spider, Voodoo Figurine, Robo-Chick
I used Consume Corpse once, Hoof was brutal with all of the high hits against the two undead. An easy win.

W: Oasis Moth, Luyu Moth, Amber Moth
With Arcane Explosion you would think this was a massacre. Thanks to losing a head game against a cocoon and a sleep it was close. I needed the undead racial to win.

D: Hydraling, Servant Of Demidos, Jademist Dancer
Hydraling was extremely hard to deal with since all of my pets were slower than it. This means it had Shell Armor up more than it didn’t.

Sally Can Wait
W: Tiny Snowman, Clock Em’, Irradiated Roach
Rabbit was great against the stun. My opponent fled before the Apocalypse hit.

W: KLR, Son Of Sethe, Fel Flame
Two Soulrush stuns meant the SoD took out both the Fel Flame and Son of Sethe. I had two pets to clean up the KLR with.

L: Fiendish Imp, Nordrassil Wisp, Son Of Sethe
Annoying imp was annoying. Rabbit was same speed as wisp and weak against imp. Opponent played it well.

That means the scores are:
Demolition Derpy: 8-1, 80 points
Magical Mystery Tour: 6-0-3, 75 points
Sally Can Wait: 8-1, 80 points

Even though Demolition Derpy and Sally Can Wait are ahead on points, Magical Mystery Tour is technically undefeated so it is still alive. Sudden Death!

Sally Can Wait
L: Kun-Lai Runt, Tiny Snowman, Stunted Direhorn

Demolition Derpy
W: Scalded Basilisk Hatchling, Blighthawk, Imperial Eagle Chick
W: Oasis Moth, Luyu Moth, Amber Moth
W: Fiendish Imp, Nordrassil Wisp, Son Of Sethe

Magical Mystery Tour
W: Murkalot, Nether Fairie Dragon, Nether Fairie Dragon
W: Jademist Dancer, Blighthawk, Junglebeak
L: Menagerie Custodian, Infinite Whelpling, Weebomination

In that last battle the Menagerie Custodian stunned Hogs to keep him from healing. A 25% stun move determines the outcome of a (two) month long competition, lovely.

Congrats Wiff and Demolition Derpy. Email at discodoggywow@gmail.com with your choice of store pet and let me know if you’re on a US or EU realm.

Thanks everyone!

1000 Battles Of PvP Data

I’ve compiled more data from my meta, this time around I did 1000 battles. I used a spreadsheet to keep track of wins and losses over spans of a few days to a week off and on from 6/2 to 7/26, in either chunks of 125 or 250 battles at a time.

Rather than list all the data as I’ve done in the past I’ll just include a few items that I think are important. I’ll put the link to my spreadsheet down at the bottom if you want to see it all the data.

Next are the pets that did the best against me. This requires a little explanation. Overall my record was 788-181-31. This means that my opponents beat me 18.1% of the time. It was Poofah’s idea to include the ratio of each pet’s win percentage to the overall win percentage of my opponents. I called it the relative ratio for lack of a better name. This gives a better indicator of how well a pet does. For example, the Bone Seprent had a 38.9 win percentage. Doesn’t sound too great, but when you compare that to the 18.1 overall win percentage with a ratio you can see that the Bone Serpent is really good: 38.9/18.1 = 2.15, so the Bone Serpent was twice as likely to beat me as a random pet encountered in the queue. Here are the pets that appeared at least 10 times listed in order of their win percentages:

pet – win % – relative ratio
Zomstrok 56.3% 3.11

POTM #7

July 2015: Servant Of Demidos
servantWith such a low health pool the Servant Of Demidos can really make use of the magic racial and its 366 power is nothing to scoff at. This is a pet that I always think “I could do something really cool with that”, yet never do. Well, now it’s your chance to do something really cool with it. There are some meaningful choices to make with the move set: Magic Sword or Arcane Explosion, Siphon Anima or Clean-Up, Lightning Shield or Soulrush? I’m interested to see what people can do with it.

Thanks :)

Once again I have changed the rules, after months (:P) of trying to find the best system I have given up on overcomplicating things and have finally gone with simplicity.

There are no more team points, no more quality win points.

Here is the tier list: Top & High Tier List

Since there are no more quality win points, progress to the championship rounds will be based solely on points from wins and draws.

Each win will be worth ten points, each draw will be worth five points. A stalemate will be considered a draw.

Initially I will play each submitted team an equal number of times. The number of times that I play each team will depend on the number of submissions. I will state this initial number of battles after all teams are submitted. I reserve the right to change this if I am running short on time. Expect around four or five initial battles. After the initial battles the top four teams will move onto the championship round, where I will play each team three more times.

I hope that this is the final change to the rules, I think that It’ll work out.

Last Month’s Teams:
It’s already July 1st and I’ve only done three battles for each team, and I never got around to taking screenshots (I was planning on doing it on the fourth or fifth battle). I think for the sake of moving on I will keep it at three battles.

I always learn something when I do these pet of the month battles, what this month did for me is reinforce something that I already knew: I prefer guaranteed speed to a chance at speed. What that means is that I would rather have a really fast pet with less attack that I know is going to be faster than most pets, rather than a somewhat fast pet that has the chance of being faster than a lot of pets. I always run S/S rabbits, and I think after this POTM I will always run P/S or S/S foxes. There were just too many cases where I was wishing for more speed, even with the buff. If you chose a slower fox please don’t think I’m saying it was a bad choice or a bad team. It’s really a matter of preference, that’s all.

I think that the fox is a great support pet, but being limited to only one high-tier pet for its team mates left the fox with a lot of work to do.

No avoidance meant I had to lose to a cheesy triple team.

The top four scores are 32, 24, 23, 23 and 22.5, of which three teams share the last score. I guess that means all three teams will go into the championship rounds. Due to this I plan on doing three more battles with each of these teams rather than four. Once again qwp play no factor in the outcome, I will not miss them.

The teams moving on are:
Crouching Fox Diving Terror
Dazzling Deep Disco Dance Dance Dominion

Each enemy pet countered each of mine. The stun saved the day.
L: Graves, Ghastly Kid, Jademist Dancer
Ended up one on one servant versus dancer but couldn’t pull it off.
W: Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette, Iron Starlette
Saw my snowman and fled. Would the snowman have been enough to trump the all the strong damage to the fox? We’ll never know thanks to the lack of spine.

It may be the first time ever that quality win points finally factor into the competition. Which is funny since this is the last month that system will be used. In this case I can see their merit: Fox em! beat three really tough teams in the course of going 5-1. Congrats caloides! Send me an email at dicodoggywow@gmail.com with the pet you want, please let me know if you are on a US or EU server, and please use the email that you want the pet gifted to.

I ended the fox experience on a strong note, I’m glad that I learned so much about using it. Thanks everyone for the teams!

POTM #6

June 2015: Fox/Worg
worgThis month’s pet is one that I’m finally starting to use after years of hearing how good it is: the fox. These undead killing machines and tricky speedsters can really put a hurt on both undead and speed reliant teams. Since the foxes and worgs have the same move set it made sense not to limit the choice to one specific fox or worg pet but instead make them all available. Lately I’ve been using Flurry, Howl and Dazzling Dance, but in the past I’ve used Crouch and Leap. You have some options.

You can use whatever breed you like, if I don’t have it then I’ll go out and get it. Options are:
S/S Alpine Foxling
P/B Alpine Foxling
B/B Alpine Foxling Kit
S/B Alpine Foxling Kit
P/S Arctic Fox Kit
H/S Fox Kit
H/P Fjord Worg Pup
P/P Fjord Worg Pup
H/H Worg Pup

So how does the contest work?

Thanks :)

Before I go into the new rules I would just like to say thanks for everyone that contributed ideas for the format of this competition. People put a lot of thought into it an I appreciate it.

There are no more team points. The system where team points were deducted for using top-tier pets but then allowed undefeated teams to progress was flawed. Sure, nobody benefitted from it last month, but it had the potential to be abused so it should be changed. Instead there will be a “pet allowance”. The allowance will enable you to use a high or top-tier pet(s) on your team, otherwise any pets above that tier are disallowed. For example, if the allowance was 1 top-tier pet then you could choose one top, high or non-tier pet, while the other must be a non-tier pet. By non-tier I mean pets that aren’t on the list at all.

This month’s pet allowance: 1 high-tier pet.

Just to be clear: one of your pets can be a high or non-tier, the other must be non-tier.

So your two options look like this:

POTM
high-tier pet
non-tier pet

or

POTM
non-tier pet
non-tier pet

Also, Graves is banned due to speculations of being OP. It’ll probably end up on the top tier list.

Here is the tier list: Top & High Tier List

I have decided to keep quality win points for now. Teams get extra points for beating higher quality opponents. If your team beats a team with a top-tier pet on it then you earn an extra point for each top-tier pet, if it beats a team with a high-tier pet on it then it’ll earn a half point for each high-tier pet on the enemy team.

Each win will be worth ten points, each draw will be worth five points. A stalemate will be considered a draw.

Initially I will play each submitted team an equal number of times. The number of times that I play each team will depend on the number of submissions. I will state this initial number of battles after all teams are submitted. Expect around four or five initial battles. After the initial battles the top five teams will move onto the championship round, where I will play each team four more times. Scores and records do not reset for the championship rounds. All undefeated teams will automatically move into the championship round, even if there are more than five. Quality win points will factor into the championship rounds. If there is either a tie or multiple undefeated teams after the championship rounds then those teams will enter a sudden death mode, where each team will play another battle until one team has more wins than the other in sudden death. Quality win points do not factor into sudden death.

In the event that a team that is not undefeated has a higher score than an undefeated team then both will go to sudden death. Undefeated means no losses. Sudden death cannot be won on a draw, if all teams draw or lose in a round of sudden death then another round will be necessary to determine the winner.

Good luck and I look forward to your foxy (or worgy) teams.

Last Month’s Teams:
I apologize for not showcasing the teams during write-ups throughout the month as I stated I would; my long break made it hard to do that. This month I will, really.

Here are how last month’s Young Talbuk teams did. I gave a few quick notes for each battle so people have some idea of what went on. There are no notes on the fourth battle because of a data saving issue. Luckily I was able to remember the wins and losses from the fourth battle with the help of screenshots, but I didn’t remember the details well enough to comment.

Note: Some of the results are different that what I originally published. After realizing that a certain team that I had faced a few times was probably a bot I went back and replayed those battles. Interestingly, the results for the top five teams didn’t change.

Initial Battles

Abyssal Buck
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tough n’ Cuddly, Flurry)
P/P Abyssius (Crush, Flamethrower, Volcano)
H/B Tiny Blue Carp (Surge, Wild Magic, Pump)

Score: 54 (3-2, 20 team points, 4 quality win points)
abyssaltalbukW: Kun-Lai Runt, Sunreaver Micro-Sentry, Bone Serpent (1.5)
Lightning helped me.
W: Teroclaw Hatchling, Teroclaw Hatchling, Pandaren Earth Spirit (2)
Surge was useful on a few occasions. The final TH couldn’t finish the talbuk through the shield.
L: Unborn Val’kyr, Mr. Bigglesworth, Kun-Lai Runt
Started with talbuk for quick takedown of valk, should have gone with fish for defense instead.
L: Fiendish Imp, Lovebird Hatchling, Bronze Whelpling
W: Core Hound Pup, Bonkers, Stitched Pup
Bonkers stunned once and Volcano stunned twice.

Blighted Talbuk
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tough ‘n Cuddly, Flurry)
H/P* Blighted Squirrel (Scratch, Crouch, Stampede)
H/P Zomstrok (Infected Claw, Rot, Carpnado)

Score: 72.5 (5-0, 20 team points, 2.5 quality win points)
blightedtalbuk2W: Amber Moth, Onyxian Whelpling, Nexus Whelpling (1.5)
Barely used talbuk.
W: Worg Pup, Leviathan Hatchling, Iron Starlette
Might have been harder if worg wasn’t level 24 green.
W: Jademist Dancer, Bonkers, Mossbite Skitterer (1)
Blighted Squirrel took out beast then left dancer with Shattered Defenses for the talbuk to triple Flurry.
W: Squirrel, Toxic Wasteling, Flat-Tooth Calf
W: Corefire Imp, Chrominius, Molten Corgi
Shattered Defenses + Carpnado = 1236 damage to end the battle.

Electrified Carps Of Doom
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tuff n’ Cuddly, Flurry)
P/S Yu’la (Jadefire Lightning, Celestial Blessing, Life Exchange)
H/P Zomstrok (Infected Claw, Shell Shield, Carpnado)

Score: 41.5 (2-3, 20 team points, 1.5 quality win points)
electrifiedcarpsW: Abyssius, Bone Serpent, Sunreaver Micro-Sentry (1)
I both played Yu’la poorly and got stunned. Talbuk survived with 33 health.
W: Clockwork Gnome, Effervescent Glowfly, Fel Flame (0.5)
Life Exchange used for +/- 483 health. Blessing went to Zomstrok.
L: Unborn Val’kyr, Mr. Bigglesworth, Kun-Lai Runt
Ugg, lost to this team twice now. I tried to get revenge with one of my own teams but ran into the flee bot three times in a row. I thought the talbuk’s shield would be enough to withstand the KLR sweeper; I was wrong.
L: Magical Crawdad, Sun Sproutling, Singing Sunflower
L: Nexus Whelpling, Nexus Whelpling, Ghostly Skull
A triple Flurry would have won, but a double meant 39 health remained.

Fiery Display Of Filth
H/P Zomstrok (Infected Claw, Shell Shield, Carpnado)
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tough ‘n Cuddly, Flurry)
S/S Molten Corgi (Flamethrower, Cauterize, Puppies of the Flame)

Score: 55.5 (3-2, 20 team points, 5.5 quality win points)
fireydisplayL: Ashwing Moth, Dread Hatchling, Silkbead Snail
Corgi lacked firepower at end to damage through Consume Corpse.
L: Clockwork Gnome, Effervescent Glowfly, Fel Flame
I’m finding the corgi hard to use. Miscalculated DoT damage and let Zomstrok die on back line.
W: Unborn Val’kyr, Oily Slimeling, Kun-Lai Runt (1.5)
The corgi stalled fifteen rounds while taking out the valk and some of the slimeling.
W: Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Fragment Of Anger, Hydraling (2)
W: Lil’ Ragnaros, Ashwing Moth, Bonkers (2)
I was able to avoid the second trap by going underground.

Friki Talbuks

L: Teroclaw Hatchling, Ghastly Kid, Sky-Bo
I had a slight bit of hope at the end until I was chain stunned by Sky-Bo.
L: Anubisath Idol, Fossilized Hatchling, Iron Starlette
I tried to take out the Fossilized Hatchling with Flurry before it could get off its second BONESTORM, but the talbuk didn’t hit a single third attack.
W: Softshell Snapling, Corefire Imp, Skunky Alemental
W: Trunks, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Xu-Fu (1.5)
Loser fled after missing two When Elekks Fly.

Green Acres
P/S Crazy Carrot (Ironbark, Acid Rain, Blistering Cold)
P/B Mr. Wiggles (Diseased Bite, Crouch, Headbutt)
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tough ‘n Cuddly, Flurry)

Score: 54.5 (3-2, 20 team points, 4.5 quality win points)
greenacresW: Unborn Val’kyr, Ashwing Moth, Infinite Whelpling (2)
Opponent fled early.
L: Jademist Dancer, Blighthawk, Emperor Crab
Thanks to a Headbutt stun it was closer than it should have been. Clonedance is still one of the best teams around.
W: Lil’ Bling, Twilight Wasp, Seagull (0.5)
Frostbite ticks against Lil’ Bling were painful at the end of the battle.
W: Son Of Sethe, Creepy Crate, Fossilized Hatchling (2)
L: Sky-Bo, Scourged Whelpling, Crimson Whelpling
Whenever I lose to a Crimson Whelpling I feel I’ve done something wrong. In this case it was using Acid Rain to break the decoy even when I thought a Dreadful Breath was incoming.

Horny Animals
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tuff n’ Cuddly, Flurry)
P/P Death Talon Whelpguard (Shadowflame, Whirlwind, Darkflame)
H/P Trunks (Smash, Ethereal, Avalanche)

Score: 52 (3-2, 20 team points, 2 quality win points)

W: Stitched Pup, Blue Clockwork Rocket Bot, Harbinger Of Flame
Very close. Mech left a rocket unused.
W: Teroclaw Hatchling, Ashwing Moth, Father Winter’s Helper (2)
DTW is a beast one on one against an Alpha Strike Teroclaw.
W: Lil’ Tarecgosa, Netherspawn, Chaos Pup
L: Nexus Whelpling, Nexus Whelpling, Ghostly Skull
I used the talbuk’s defense as well as I could, b ut there was still just too much offense to deal with.

icedtalbukL: Teroclaw Hatchling, Stunted Direhorn, Corfire Imp
The ultra-tier Teroclaw Hatchling was too much to handle. If it’s any consolation I gave a dark spanking with Rich Girls for revenge.
W: Shore Crab, Dread Hatchling, Lesser Voidcaller (1)
Easy win against new battler.
W: Anubisath Idol, Fossilized Hatchling, Iron Starlette (2)
Three misses in the final showdown made this one a nail biter. Penguin survived with 8 health.
L: Dread Hatchling, Son Of Sethe, Jungle Darter
L: Lil’ Tarecgosa, Soul Of The Aspects, Molten Corgi
Feel bad about this one, I lost track of the recovering rounds. Playing bad and chain queuing to finish up is not working out well.

Lord of the Flies
S/S Young Talbuk (Horn Gore, Tough n’ Cuddly, Flurry)
P/S Voodoo Figurine (Shadow Slash, Wild Magic, Rot)
H/B Swamp Croaker (Water Jet, Swarm of Flies, Bubble)

Score: 43.5 (2-3, 20 team points, 3.5 quality win points)
lordofthefliesL: Bone Serpent, Dread Raven, Stone Grinder
Two darkness misses and a stun makes it hard to beat a Bone Serpent. I let it Nocturnal Strike my frog, oops.
W: Tiny Snowman, Amber Moth, Netherspace Abyssal (1)
Rot/Flurry synergy worked wonderfully.
L: Fiendish Imp, Blossoming Ancient, Bone Serpent
Blossoming Ancient is one of the worst griefing pets around. 24 rounds of me having no chance to win. Goodbye POTM battles, hello Jademist Dancer.
L: Amber Moth, Bonkers, Lil’ Ragnaros
W: Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Stunted Direhorn, Scourged Whelpling (2.5)

shockandawesomelyfastW: Unborn Val’kyr, Murkalot, Menagerie Custodian (2)
Ate buffed Ion Cannon with Nightshade Sproutling.
W: Sunreaver Micro-Sentry, Nordrassil Wisp, Pandaren Air Spirit
Darkness got rid of the lightning twice.
L: Magical Crawdad, Fiendish Imp, Sen’Jin Fetish
It was closer than I thought it would be. Surge was a PITA.
W: Son Of Sethe, Dread Hatchling, Mojo (2)
L: Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Fel Flame, Zandalari Toenibbler
A team slow can be devastating when you rely on speed. Primal Cry is a brutal move against this team.

Shock and D’aww

Almost lost due to a mispress.
W: Molten Corgi, Iron Starlette, Celestial Dragon
Used my own puppy as a soft counter threat to the Wind-Up.
W: Young Talbuk, Royal Moth, Pet Bombling (1)
Firewing was able to kill the Pet Bombling and outlast its Minefield.
W: Son Of Animus, Amber Moth, Lil’ KT (1.5)
W: Argi, Lil’ Ragnaros, Dread Hatchling (2)
Opponent fled after ten rounds of Firewing dominating the darkness bird then Argi.

Score: 77 (5-0, 20 team points, 7 quality win points)
sportsmansparadiseW: Son Of Animus, Junglebeak, Fragment Of Desire (1.5)
Junglebeak did 0 damage thanks to AoE and coming into frenzy/roots combo.
W: Tranquil Mechanical Yeti, Fishy, Ashstone Core
The ANG took out the yeti and half of the core. Zomstrok finished it off.
W: Xu-Fu, Fossilized Hatchling, Iron Starlette (1.5)
A close battle that required a triple Flurry on the last round for the win.
W: Emerald Proto-Whelp, Fingal Abomination, Lil’ Ragnaros (1.5)
W: Unborn Val’kyr, Rabbit, Hydraling (2.5)
The talbuk started against the valk, then the ANG really hurt the Hydraling.

Field effects and curse worked amazingly well.
L: Bone Serpent, Trunks, Qiraji Guardling
Unlucky, got hit with 40% Nocturnal Strike and missed in sandstorm.
W: Ashwing Moth, Mirror Strider, Silkbead Snail (1)
Had to be careful of the aquatic damage against my elemental, but other than that it was easy.
W: Emerald Proto-Whelp, Fingal Abomination, Alpine Hare (0.5)
W: Nexus Whelpling, Nexus Whelpling, Stitched Pup (1)
Changed the weather to avoid the double Mana Surge. It turned out to be an easy win.

Winnebago Warriors

Didn’t use the talbuk.
W: Unborn Val’kyr, Mr. Bigglesworth, Kun-Lai Runt (1.5)
Used Blinding Poison effectively to deny CoD and prevent slow.
L: Unborn Val’kyr, Spineclaw Crab, Spineclaw Crab
An unfortunate crit on the valk’s undead round killed my elemental on the swap. I would have been able to blind, Call Darkness, Lash, Carpnado for a possibly close win. The crit ruined that, Carpnado never reset. Rarely due I bemoan rng this vehemently but this was an intense, well-played battle on both sides that shouldn’t have been decided like that.
W: Abyssius, Lil’ K.T., Harbinger Of Flame
W: Fiendish Imp, Blighthawk, Clockwork Gnome (2.5)
I started with my elemental so the imp would force Zomstrok in. It worked, Zomstrok’s shield then dominated with turret an Immolation blocks.

If I added anything up wrong then please let me know :)

Championship Rounds

Blighted Talbuk
champ1D: Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, Murkalot, Swamp Croaker
What a horribly ugly tactic my opponent used: Decoy, Bubble and Shieldstorm. As disappointed as I was at not winning I was even more pleased that my opponent didn’t win.
W: Bone Serpent, Ruby Droplet, Chrominius (1)
Sigh, another early flee after the afk Bone Serpent got hit with a bleed and debuff. I may need to re-evaluate early flees and afk battles since since they are having such an impact on this month’s competition.
W: Unborn Val’kyr, Silkbead Snail, Emerald Turtle (1)
This was an easy battle that only required Zomstrok to finish off the turtle with a Carpnado.
W: Mechanical Scorpid, Alpine Foxling, Creepy Crate
When Tough n’ Cuddy expired it caused the scorpid’s Extra Plating to disappear, I didn’t know the bug worked that way as well. It wasn’t that close of a battle, but if the talbuk had to take a Wind-Up things could change drastically.

Final Score: 109.5 (8-0-1, 20 team points, 4.5 qwp)

Shock and D’Aww
champ2W: Sister Of Temptation, Ancient Nest Guardian, Nether Ray Fry
I was almost able to two-pet this with the corgi and bird. I love Inferno Herding. I think since everyone and they’re mom uses Puppies of the Lame the swap can surprise people.
W: Bone Serpent, Ruby Droplet, Chrominius (1)
The talbuk couldn’t hit a triple Flurry against the Bone Serpent, but managed to take it out and survive thanks to the shield. After that there was a lot of swapping to avoid the strong nuke against my flyer. Once again Inferno Herding was invaluable.
L: Mr. Bigglesworth, Rotten Little Helper, Tiny Snowman
Dang, there’s the first loss. Without any avoidance the Ice Tomb was a problem. Really the problem was an estimation error on my part. I’m generally quite good at mental math estimations, you know, being a math teacher and all that, but I was off by a few health. Instead of the corgi taking out the humanoid it survived to lay more mines. Sucks to get the first loss that way.
W: Dread Hatchling, Fossilized Hatchling, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling (3)
Rng went horribly for me with Nocturnal Strike hitting my elemental, a big crit and a darkness miss. The battle ended in a healing showdown between my bird and the Fossilized Hatchling. Thanks to the it’s main attack being a weak Claw I was able to out heal for the win.

Final Score: 110 (8-1, 20 team points, 10 qwp)

Sportsman’s Paradise
champ3D: Teroclaw Hatchling, Lil’ K.T., Abyssius
I didn’t think I was even going to be able to pull out the draw, but Tough n’ Cuddly saved me at the end.
W: Corefire Imp, Unborn Val’kyr, Scourged Whelpling (2)
I was stressing over how to handle the valk and Wild Magic combo that I thought might be coming. I decided to eat everything with Zomstrok. It didn’t matter because my opponent used the “I’m going to take strong damage with my imp then run away when it doesn’t work out strategy”. I wouldn’t suggest trying that one at home. Oh, the flees.
L: Mechancial Pandaren Dragonling, Stunted Direhorn, Spawn Of G’Nathus
This was a hard one; I felt I played it well enough, but Flurry was being stingy with its triple hits. I was in decent shape to win at the end if Horn Attack didn’t proc. It did, I still had a chance to win with two high hits from infected claw, but it wasn’t in the cards.
W: Unborn Val’kyr, Silkbead Snail, Emerald Turtle (1)
An easy win against an inexperienced player.

Final Score: 105 (7-1-1, 20 team points, 10 qwp)

Stack em’ High
champ4L: Ore Eater, Fel Flame, Minfernal
Ore Eater godmode activated! Nerf the damn Shell Armor already! Forboding Curse hardly put a dent into the OP amor.
W: Molten Corgi, Rabbit, Syd the Squid (1)
Flurry handled the bubble well. The rabbit was slower than the talbuk, a faster rabbit may have ended differently.
L: Trunks, Qiraji Guardling, Bone Serpent
The battle really came down to one round, where I was either going to change the weather or get killed by When Elekks Fly. I got killed so that move had priority of the rest of the battle. Sometimes I wonder how I’ve lasted so long doing pet battles with the introduction of idiotic strategies like WEF spam. Graves is next.
L: Zandalari Toenibbler, Bone Serpent, Stunted Yeti
The Lift-Off caught me off guard while I was dealing with a real life distraction. Sounds like a cop out, I know, but that’s what happened. Not to say I would have won anyways, Primal Cry screwed me up yet again.

Final Score: 75 (5-4, 20 team points, 5 qwp)

Winnebago Warriors
champ5W: Nether Fairie Dragon, Crimson Whelpling, Sister Of Temptation
The Nightshade Sproutling took out the Crimson Whelpling and frustrated the other two pets with its blind. Frustration after another blind saw them flee.
W: Teroclaw Hatchling, Corefire Imp, Scourged Whelpling (2)
Wow, just wow. This was a Zomstrok massacre! The undead pincher countered this team so incredibly hard: it block the Immolation ticks, did strong damage to the humanoid, did strong damage while the bird was in elemental form and took weak damage from the Scourged Whelpling. Two darkness misses and a crit in my favor made things worse. The bird fled after its companions were gone and Zomstrok still had plenty of life.
L: Sky-Bo, Spawn Of G’Nathus, Chrominius
I’m again disappointed at this one. Flurry double hit and then two Infected Claws hit low. I could have tried to head game the Surge Of Power for the win but instead lost. Carpnado bugged in the end but since Chrominius had more than 309 health it wasn’t the deciding factor.
W: Anubisath Idol, Muckbreath, Chrominius (2)
I started with my elemental to change the weather. I swapped to Zomstrok to take on the idol, which stayed in to tank the strong damage. Bad idea.

Final Score: 98 (7-2, 20 team points, 8 qwp)

Sudden Death
Interesting situation here: Shock and D’aww is the winner on points yet Blighted Talbuk is still undefeated. I did say that any teams undefeated after the championship rounds will go on to sudden death, so here we go…

(I explicitly stated this will be case up above for POTM #6 so there’s no confusion next time)

Round 1
Blighted Talbuk
D: Mr. Bigglesworth, Menagerie Custodian, Pocket Reaver
I lost a head game about the Ice Barrier that prevented the win.

Shock and D’aww
L: Teroclaw Hatchling, Sky-Bo, Scourged Whelpling
Teroclaw Hatchling. I… HATE… that… pet. I can’t believe that I chose it as a previous POTM. This was a forty-six rounder that saw too much healing. There was no way that my bird was going to keep up with the Teroclaw Hatchling.

So again… an interesting situation. Can you win sudden death on a draw? Seems like such an unepic way to win the competition. Here’s what I’m going to do: both participants in sudden death will get a store pet for their efforts and their “help” working out some still existent kinks in the competition. For now the sudden death must go on! You must actually win to be the winner!

Round 2
Blighted Talbuk
L: Trunks, Xu-Fu, Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling
This battler is truly a pathetic excuse for a human being. If When Elekks Fly hits a few times they stick around, if not they flee. Sometimes they don’t even try and flee if I’m using one of my better teams. This time When Elekks Fly hit so they stuck around. Now I have a name for this team: “pathetic excuse”.

Shock and D’aww
W: Arcane Eye, Voodoo Figuring, Lil’ Tarecgosa
I had to watch out for all of that magic damage against the bird. Inferno Herding kept the Arcane Eye out when it was read to Mana Surge. A good win to win the competition. I have much more respect for the Molten Corgi and Inferno Herding after using this team. I’m not a fan of healing teams so even though Firewing did a fabulous job I can’t see myself using it too often in the future.

Congratulations Liwei!

Both Liwei and Zero please email me at discodoggywow@gmail.com with your choice of pet, and whether you are on a US or EU server. Please use the email that you want the pet gifted to.

If I counted it up correctly the Young Talbuk ended up at 59-32-3. Not great, but respectable.
